Why is Ford credited with creating the first automobile?

I was doing research for a sociology project and found that cadillac was actually founded before ford. So i was just curious as to why Ford is credited as the first automobile when cadillac came first?Why is Ford credited with creating the first automobile?Ford had the first assembly line that mass produced one type of vehicle so that it could be sold cheap. So they get credit for that. There were many auto makers before Ford and the first internal combustion powered drivable auto mobile was built by Mercedes Benz. There were also many steam powered cars before them. There were cars before that but they were so expensive and difficult to operate that they were literally inaccessible to the average person.Why is Ford credited with creating the first automobile?
