I inherited a 67 Ford Truck from my dad. The motor is not orginal, it came stock with a 352. He always told me it had a 302 engine in it, but i was reading an article in a 4x4 magazine and it described a 351W (6 valve cover bolts, upper radiator hose and thermostat, enters the intake horizonatally). Thats what my motor looks like. Are there any other ways to tell them apart from the outside? I just want to make sure what motor I have. How to tell the difference betweeen a Ford 302 and 351W?The 302 has a 4.00" bore x 3.00" stroke. A 351W has a 4.00" bore x 3.50" stroke. The block deck height is longer on a 351W than 302, due to its longer stroke in order to allow for crankshaft throw clearance. Yes the intake manifold is wider on a 351W, as the others have posted. How to tell the difference betweeen a Ford 302 and 351W?
from what I know, a 302 is a 5.0L engine and a 351 is a 5.8L engine,
so maybe you will see one of those numbers on the engine and that will tell you what you have. How to tell the difference betweeen a Ford 302 and 351W?a 302 and a 351 windsor looks simular except the internal parts.i had a 302 in a ford truch once and my nephew had a 351 windsor in a ford car and they look alike.i think some of the outside parts will interchange also. How to tell the difference betweeen a Ford 302 and 351W?
Just so you know. thats a nice truck. As far as your question, the magizine article is right. plus the intake manifold is wider than a 302. If you are thinking about keeping this truck, i would find and old 351w from an 1996 ruck. they have roller cams in 'em which saves on friction and gas.How to tell the difference betweeen a Ford 302 and 351W?Unless you are used to seeing them it's tough.
The 351 has a wider intake manifold, measure yours then measure a known 302How to tell the difference betweeen a Ford 302 and 351W?
First of all the 352 is a completly different motor from the 302/351w series it has a very wide and flat intake manifold..the most identifiable feature on it is that the valve cover actually over laps the joint between the intake manifold and the cylinder head and 3? of the valve cover bolts attach to the intake manifold.
on the 302/351w motors the valve cover bolts solely to the cylinder head. one of the easiest ways to determine a 302 vs 351w is at the back of the intake manifold the flat part that bridges the vally on the 302 it is strait for about 5inches with a little curve on one side where as on the 351 the bridge is curved all the way across.
get the serial # off block and call engine rebuilders or look on line to find out what you have.
nothing personal, i listened to other peep on and engine they said it was a 390 so i rebuilt got kit for 390 and it was a 360.
get serial# off block do it right.
good luck
