I recived a 1996 Ford mustang from a soldier who was going down range. He had lost the key to the mustang and sold it to me. I removed the ignition and tried to start the vehicle, but the anti theft system prevents me from doing so. How can i remove the system, without having to have it towed to a dealership? There is a sync operation that the dealership performs with your car key to allow the PATS system to recognize the computer chip in the car key and allow for it to start. You definitely will need to get the car towed to a local ford dealership and have them perform it for you. It could be expensive. I know that new keys for mustangs are about $100. Only the Ford computer scanner ( I thinnk its called WDS? ) is capable of re-programming the vehicle PATS system . You will also need to have 2 keys made if memory serves me correct. Try taking the title and registration with your ID to the local dealership, they may be able to cut a key for it. Otherwise try calling a locksmith.
