( Jaz Parks series by Jennifer Rardin also jaz's boss is a vampire) GOOD SERIESWhat authors can you recommend?
Based on what you're reading, I'd say maybe John Sandford or Sue Grafton, or maybe Janet Evanovich for something on the lighter side of crime/mystery. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but there are a couple of very good series I've read that run in those veins, but lean a little towards fantasy - they introduce some supernatural elements in a modern mystery setting. Try the Harry Dresden Chronicles by Jim Butcher and the Repairman Jack books by F. Paul Wilson.
JD Robb
Dean Koontz
if you like crime stories, try all of TOM CLANCY books, they're great. here's more to check out. KAY HOOPER, OR W.E.B. GRIFFIN.

I just finished Steve Berry's The Alexandria Link. It was a fun read. I would also recommend some books of Clive Cussler. You may find them interesting.
I think I like different kinds of books but here goes - Denise Mina (I just started reading her -- kind of noir maybe beige is the better word, in Scotland, Irish working class deeply Catholic immigrant and the protagonist comes from that class but is very ambitious); Reginald Hill; Sarah Peretsky; Laura Lippman; Nevada Barr, Sandra Parshall (a guppie - has very good book out).
I even like older writers - Dorothy Sayers or Margery Allingham - but even I have to admit the writing is dated.
P.D. James and Ruth Rendall - more recent but I'm listening to a James book and its very good as far as mystery but I'm thinking the language is a little dated and of course very class conscious (I guess that's more of a British thing).
