2000 Ford Explorer Brakes are squeaking and I need help with the diagnostics? How do I know if it's the front?

I have roughly 100,000 miles on the car now (2000 Ford Explorer, American Spec) and I guess everything is going wrong now. I do have another question with regards to tires. I am unsure what to order or should I just let the mechanic take care of it. But then I am thinking what if he says the front and back both need replacing and they really don't. What do I look for and what can I do?

Keep in mind, just because the brakes are squeaking does not mean there is something wrong with them. Squeaks can be caused by many things. It could be the friction material used. That vehicle is designed to have ceramic brake pads not semi metallic. One thing about ceramic pads, there are many different formulas. Use Pads from Ford or Akebono brand pads. The main caues of squeaks is vibration of the brake pad. So remember to lubricate all metal to metal contact points of the brake pad with high temp lube. (DO NOT LUBE FRICTION MATERIAL) Also make sure any and all hardware (spring slips, sleeves, slides etc) is in good shape. If the rotors are not smooth flat and clean, they should be machined and washed with soap and water after machining. As far as the tires. Look to see that you have at least 1/8" of tread all the way across the tread and all the way around the tire.2000 Ford Explorer Brakes are squeaking and I need help with the diagnostics? How do I know if it's the front?Go to a independent shop like Midas Muffler and ask them for a quote they will put your Ford on the rack and spin and check each wheel seperately....then they will tell you of any problems they have found and give you an estamate on what the repairs wil cost.

How do I know if it's the front?First I would stay away from Midas! As for the brakes squeaking, it maybe time to replace with another set of pad. I wouldn't worry about the rear, the fronts wear the most and most often abused. If you want dealer item then get one from Ford. Personally, I would use ceramic pads. They will last longer and doesn't make your front wheels black. Any local auto shop can do it for you or do it yourself and some money.



As for tires, I hope you are in the US. You can measure the depth yourself. You will need a penny with Lincoln picture on it. You measure it by sticking his head in between the thread and see if the depth is reaches his head or beyond his head you are alright. If the thread isn't touching his head, then it is time to get new tires. I've found out Wal-mart seem to be the best price when come to tires. I just wouldn't want them to do anything to it but tires.
